Db2 for z/OS – Database Backup and Recovery

Database backup and recovery is a critical part of any organisation’s IT strategy.

Without a backup and recovery plan, organisations risk losing valuable data, disrupting operations, and damaging their reputation.

Z MARS for Db2 for z/OS – Database Backup and Recovery

The ability to recover Db2 for z/OS database objects such as tablespaces and indexes following data loss, media failure, or physical or logical corruption is a key part of any availability and resilience strategy. Successfully restoring key business services promptly, in accordance with your business and regulatory requirements, whilst ensuring data integrity, requires careful planning and practice. At Triton, we not only help you understand the risks but also assist you in preparing for such events.

The Mainframe Database Backup and Recovery Study from Triton is an assessment of your Db2 for z/OS backup and recovery capabilities conducted by our experts to evaluate your recovery capabilities and ensure that they are fit for purpose in a variety of scenarios. The report delivered by the Triton study team will be easy to understand and provide recommendations based on their findings. This report will help you plan and establish a Db2 for z/OS backup and recovery strategy that you can trust.

The Database Backup and Recovery study consists of three phases:

Phase One: Data Collection and Analysis

We will ask you for some information that will help us gain a high-level understanding of your environment and prepare for Phase Two. That data will include, among other items, a listing of your Db2 for z/OS log inventory and the output of some SQL queries provided by Triton for you to run against your Db2 for z/OS catalogue.

This data is a prerequisite for Phase Two.

Phase Two: In-depth Interviews

The Triton Study team will use the information provided to arrange and carry out a set of interviews. The interviews will help the team gain a thorough understanding of your business’s availability and resilience requirements, as well as how the Db2 for z/OS logging environment and your backup and recovery processes are set up to meet those requirements.

Following those interviews, we will prepare and deliver a study report with prioritised findings and recommendations. First, we will send you a draft to review and provide feedback to the study team. Then, a final version will be presented to your executive and technical teams.

Phase Three: Optional Follow-on Implementation

Following the study report, if you require assistance in the project management and implementation of the Database Backup and Recovery Study recommendations (in part or in full), then Triton will be happy to provide that assistance based on an agreed schedule.

The benefits of a study and implementation:

  • Ensure that your backup and recovery procedures and processes are in good working order.
  • Rectify any exposures in your backup and recovery procedures that could lead to extended service unavailability.
  • Provide you with procedures to recover in a variety of scenarios such as individual object recovery, mass recovery, and point-in-time recovery.
  • Optimise your recovery and recovery-validation procedures to recover safely in accordance with your Service Level Objectives.
  • Enable you to validate the business’s recovery Service Level Objectives and provide them with realistic expected recovery times even in the event of mass recovery.
