Renewal quotes tend to arrive with less time left than you’d like. If you’re thinking about moving to a different Db2 for z/OS tools vendor, the date on that quote is your deadline. Count back from it and it gets tight quickly.
The tool is the easy bit
The jobs are what take the time. Every utility job that calls your old tool has to be converted and tested, and your batch schedule can’t stop while that happens.
One of the UK’s largest banks wanted to standardise its tooling across more than 60 Db2 subsystems. We converted 85,055 utility steps for them, at around 1,646 jobs a month. More than 40 product enhancements landed along the way, so keeping track of what was done and what wasn’t took real effort. Our automation did the heavy lifting. We wrote 21 REXX routines to handle the conversion, test data and QA checks. Read the bank case study.
An international airline had a harder deadline. It was moving to IBM’s zCloud, and its old Db2 tools couldn’t be licensed there. About 500 production housekeeping jobs and 300 migration profiles needed converting, and the performance database had to move too. The Db2 version was old and recent maintenance was thin on the ground. They still switched off the old products in time for the move. Read the airline case study.
What we actually do
We take on the conversion work so your DBAs can get on with their day jobs. That covers discovery, review, build and test, delivery and support, plus project management throughout. Your team stays involved and we train them on the new tools as we go.
The payoff can be worth it. The bank ended up with earlier access to new Db2 features, faster critical batch jobs, simpler tooling and significant licence savings.
If you want to know why we automate so much of this, our earlier post on why automated Db2 for z/OS tool replacement explains it.
